Masonic Rugby Club

The idea of the NMRUFC was, as with most ideas, brought up in conversation at the bar of Byker Masonic Hall, following a meeting one Thursday evening in 2011. It was long after the Tyler’s toast and a certain amount of alcohol was involved. A number of ex rugby playing brethren, many of an age that found it difficult to remember back to their playing days, thought it a good idea to indulge themselves once more in the name of charity.

The NMRUFC is made up of players both young and old, ranging from 21 to 60. All players get a game, though how long they stay on for is another matter. There are also generations of families playing together, all in the name of Charity.

A trophy, the Alice Gingell Memorial Cup, was donated by Bro Vaughn Gingell, along with a housing cabinet, donated by W.Bro Mickey Prior.

Training was subsequently arranged for Sunday mornings and a challenge made to the Province of Durham for a fixture in 2012, which was won by the NMRUFC, 62-10.

The 2013 fixture was won by the Province of Durham, with 2014 seeing the Province of Northumberland bringing the silverware back to its rightful home, where it has stayed since, as Durham were unable to field a team and had to concede in 2015.

The next hair brained scheme, cooked up by the NMRUFC, was for an international game against Scottish masons which was played at Murrayfield in June 2014. This was won by a contingent of masons from Durham, Northumberland and Yorkshire, who bought back the Mark Wright Trophy, which now also resides alongside the Alice Gingell Memorial Cup at Byker Masonic Hall, the home of the NMRUFC.

The NMRUFC supports local charities within the region and, to date, has raised in excess of £5000. The charities who have benefited from their support are

2012 – The Evening Chronicle Sunshine Fund and the Teenage Cancer Trust
2013 – Metro Radio Cash for Kids and DEBRA
2014 – The Percy Headley Foundation and Bright Red
2015 – Bright Red and Cheviot House
