Teddy bear hospital scheme reaches milestone

NHS Press Release:

A scheme to give young children who are receiving treatment at Wansbeck, Alnwick or Berwick hospitals a teddy bear has reached an important milestone.

The Northern Region of Northumberland Masonic Lodges has given more than 5,000 teddy bears as part of the Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) programme. The programme, which has been running for over four years, involves giving the children a teddy bear when they arrive at hospital to comfort them before, during and after treatment.

John Ternent Treasurer, Paul Anderson Chairman and Les Murray Secretary for the Northern Region of Masonic Lodges presented special Presentation Bears to selected children at Wansbeck, Alnwick and Berwick Minor Injuries Units which are managed by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust.

John said “Among all of our charitable activities, this is one I’m most proud of. To see how the simple act of receiving and cuddling one of our bears reduces anxiety is incredibly pleasing. Without the generosity and continuing support of our Lodges, individual donations and fundraising events, we would not be here today.”

All staff at the hospitals are in agreement that “It’s great that the scheme has helped so many children with their experience of being treated in hospital. We are grateful for the support of the Freemasons in funding the scheme which really makes a difference to young patients.”

Corbridge County and Glendale Shows 2012:

The TLC, “Teddies for Loving Care” information was one of the main attractions again, but it was quite worrying that a number of brethren who attended their Lodges were unaware of its existence.

There was a great deal of positive feedback appertaining to us informing the public of the overall purpose of Freemasonry which seemed to lay a few myths to rest.

From the shows the TLC is becoming very well recognized by parents and children who have benefited by receiving a Teddy when attending hospital. When asked where the Teddy Bears came from “the hospital” one lady answered. After an explanation the lady now thinks Freemasons are brilliant.

Donations and Fund Raising:

May we say a big thank you to the Lodges who have already made their donations to the fund? As like everything else the cost of purchasing the Teddy Bears has risen to £1.30 per bear. For those who have not yet donated please do so as the continuance of this very worthwhile project is much dependant on your generosity.

Any Lodge thinking of holding a fund raising event, please let us know so that it can be broadcast to all Masonic Halls within our area and hopefully boost the numbers by bringing together brethren, wives and partners.
