Teddies for Loving Care

TLC Appeal Northumberland Central – 1st Annual Report

During September 2009 we first launched our appeal by writing to all the Craft Lodges within the Northumberland Central area to ask them to help us raise funds to provide Teddy Bears to local A&E; Centres within and around Newcastle.
Our attempts to raise funds over the last 14 months have resulted in sporadic responses. From the 85 Lodges we targeted only 27 of them provided some form of donation. We appreciate that not every lodge may be able to afford to donate, but for those who so positively responded to this appeal we are most grateful for the contributions they made.
We have to date managed to raise from these Craft Lodges and other sources a grand total of £4,569 which we have outlined in some detail below.

Individual Craft Lodges donations: £1,719
Royal Arch Chapters donations: £55
Other Orders donations: £80
Richard Henry Holmes Benevolent Fund: £ 1,000
Private Donations: £350
Sale of Lapel Badges £96
Other funds (purchase of teddy bears): £25
Fund raising Events: £1,244

We are very grateful to both Victory Chapter 3986 and Oriental Mark Lodge 1890 for their particular contributions as these were given of their own volition without receiving any kind of letter asking for funds.
The appeal did get off to a good start with a generous donation from RHH Benevolent Fund which enabled us to provide an initial set of Teddies to our first recipient, the Newcastle General A&E; department. They received their first batch on the 5th November, a very apt day given that on Guy Fawkes the A&E; can usually expect to treat many children suffering from both direct and related firework injuries. We are very happy to report that since that date we have now provided The Newcastle General A&E; with 1,000 bears and they have asked us extend their most grateful thanks and appreciation to all those involved in this appeal.
We recently added our second recipient, the NHS Walk-In Centre in Molineux Street, Byker. Their first delivery of bears will be received coincidently again on the 5th November, just in time to help them deal with children who may be suffering from firework related injuries.
As we are now supporting two NHS centres we obviously need to maintain the momentum and therefore we will again be writing to all the original Craft Lodges to both update them as to where we are at present with the Appeal and to request a donation, which for some Lodges will be their second or third donation. Depending on the growth of the donations we receive aim to add a further recipient, the Children’s Ward at the RVI as they have made a strong case that these bears will greatly help them with those children who require surgery, or extensive treatment. In our next Annual report we update everyone on how successful we have been, particularly with our next aim.
The Appeal committee below will be happy to answer any queries and welcome any suggestions to help the appeal move forward.
