On Sunday 29th March 2015 the NMBA (Northumberland Masonic Bowls Association) invited the widow of the late W Bro. John Ovens of St. John’s Lodge No. 1712 for the presentation of the John Ovens Memorial Shield Indoor Singles competition. The competition was played over a period of 6 weeks on a points system. It was well contested and enjoyed by all who took part. There was an average of 20 players turning up each week to participate and it was a great effort and thanks to all those who supported it.

W Bro. Malcolm McPherson of Arcot Lodge No. 7000 and Bro. Keith Thompson of the Gavel Lodge No. 8928 went into the final game on equal points, both having won 5 out of 5. However, Bro. Keith lost his match while W Bro. Malcolm maintained his record and won his sixth game to claim the title and to becoming the first person to win this new competition.

Mrs. Dorothy Ovens presented the trophy and thanked the NMBA for holding the competition in her husband’s memory. Mrs Ovens was accompanied by several members of St. John’s Lodge who had organised in the making of the Shield.

W Bro. Tom Foo, the Chairman was proclaimed the strongest player in the competition and received a wooden spoon as his prize.

Our thanks go to Mrs. Ovens, W Bro. Bill Errington, the Brethren of St. John’s Lodge and of course, to West Denton Indoor Bowls Centre for allowing us to hold the competition there and looking after us.

If anyone wants to take part in any of the games or just wishes to make a donation, please e-mail myself at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Last year we presented a cheque to the Province for £750.

Unfortunately last year, two of our regular players passed away and they were W Bros. David Osbourne and Fred Butler. We will organise two games in memory of them at Souter and Cramlington and details are still being finalised. If any brother knew these Brethren and would like to come along on the day to support them, again please e-mail me and I will keep you informed.

Thanks for your help.
