Sunday 19th May 2013, NMBA (Northumberland Masonic Bowling Association) played our first bowls match of the year, the annual season opener North v South of the Province game at Souter Bowls Club, Monkseaton. Considering the bad weather from the previous day and the dull and overcast conditions on the day, we had a splendid turnout of 20 Brethren.

The game was played in great spirit, humour and also very competitively. We had three rinks playing, two with three players per team and one with four. In what was a close match throughout the 21 ends, the South team won one rink 17-13, another rink was drawn 18-18, while the North team won the final rink 21-14. This meant the North team won overall 52-49. Well done to both teams for making it a good game. However, as we always say the result is secondary. Everyone enjoyed themselves and I would strongly recommend any brother who plays or wishes to play, to come along to one of our matches and take part. At the end of the game we had a game of “spider”, where whoever was nearest the jack after everyone through a wood, won a bottle of whisky. This was well received, especially by the brother who won it. However, the calling of GO was a bit dubious! A big “thank you” goes to Souter Bowls Club and their members for once again allowing us the use of their green and their facilities.

The following are our remaining fixtures and so if anyone wishes to join and play, please get in touch with myself. However, if you just want to come along and show your support, you will be made more than welcome.

  • Tuesday 2nd July - Home match v Cumbria @ St Georges Bowls Club, Morpeth. 1.00 for 2.00 p.m. start.
  • Sunday 21st July - Markham Wright Pairs @ Alexandra Park, Cramlington. 10.00 a.m. start.
