50th Certificate for Bro. Derek Thompson

Bro. Derek Thompson received his 50th Year Certificate at the regular meeting of Homelyn Lodge No. 6075 on Wednesday 19th January 2011 having been initiated into Freemasonry on the 21st December 1960.

W Bro. Michael Daws, APGM, PSGD made the presentation.  He made reference to Bro. Derek’s amazing story of a very full and fulfilled personal, professional and civic life.  Reference was made to a working life which began in the mine at Lynemouth, continued into teaching in Kent and elsewhere, and which concluded with the position of Headmaster of Gallowhill Special Needs School.

In his civic life, Bro. Derek has been Chairman of Morpeth Town Council and Mayor of Castle Morpeth.  Hobbies are also engaged in:  including wood turning, he is a qualified silversmith with his own hallmark, and “between” all this activity, he is also an expert bird watcher.  Despite having to move around the country with his career, Bro. Derek has continued his valued and appreciated friendship and fellowship from his Masonic life.  A remarkable man.

In the picture are Bro. Derek, W Bro. Michael Daws APGM, PSGD; Grand Officers W Bro’s Brian White PAGDC and John Warham PAGDC; and W Bro Ray Ayre ProvAGDC.  W Bro John also contributed to a memorable evening with an illustrated talk on the life and times of Robbie Burns followed by a very dramatic enactment of the Address to the Haggis at the Festive Board.
