Northumberland Masons Break Records Again in 2013

We are pleased to announce that Freemason and their families in Northumberland once again received record amounts of support from the four main central Masonic Charities totalling a £521,293 for the year 2013 compared to £502,873 in 2012.

The breakdown of the charities is as follows:

Grand Charity

This is the charity to help Freemasons and their dependants in times of financial troubles this could include: sudden loss of employment, illness, death of a partner etc.

41 beneficiaries received £113.355 during 2013 and the running total for the last five years is £667,327 helping 287 families.

Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys

This has been a busy year again for the Trust and we have increased the awards for children and young people to a total of £164,741 supporting 44 cases during the year.

Apart from helping with allowances for these applicants, support is also offered by helping to pay for computers, extra school activities which can include sports training and music lessons indeed anything will be considered which could improve the quality of life and education for these young people.

Masonic Samaritan Fund

During 2013 the requests from brethren for help from the Samaritan fund increased from 29 cases in 2012 to 37 in 2013.

We have assisted in various requests including:

Dental treatment (3)

Medical (3)

Respite Care (3)

Home Adaptations (1)

Mobility (20)

Counselling Care Line (3)

Others  (4)

Two new services are now being provided for from the MSF which can assist the brethren are:

Counselling Care Line

Anyone who would like to talk to a counsellor in FULL confidence can initially telephone the MSF (020 7404 1550) and after confirming their eligibility they will then be put into contact with a counsellor who can help with their issues.

The MSF Counselling Careline can offer support for:

  • Anxiety, depression, work place pressure or stress
  • Bereavement, divorce or bankruptcy
  • Illness, addiction or family ill-health
  • Feelings of uncertainty, growing worry or panic attacks

MSF Eligibility Calculator

Have you ever wondered if you could have help from the MSF for a particular medical or associated problem --- well now you can find out by the on line calculator.

The calculator will assess your eligibility to apply for a Masonic Samaritan Fund grant to fund a private treatment, care or support.

The questions should be completed by, or on behalf of the person seeking assistance.

The MSF Calculator asks 10 questions in order to ascertain the applicant’s:

1.  Masonic Connection

2.  Assistance required

3. Financial circumstances

Based on the information you provide, the calculator will outline what steps you are required to make prior to making the full application, if you then choose to continue, it will tell you if you are eligible to apply for assistance.

R.M.B.I.

During 2013 the RMBI supported 21 individuals to the total cost of £149,993 in this Province.

Some of that support did help our residents at Scarborough Court which is one of the RMBI flagship residential Homes in the country.

Another service the RMBI provides is a dedicated team of Care Advice Workers who are keen to visit anyone (over the age of 60 years) in the Province in their own home who thinks they need support of any kind.

In November 2013 we held an informal training evening at Hexham Masonic Hall which was well received by brethren from various Lodges in the area.

We are now planning to expand these events across the Province during the first 5 months of 2014 - we will be visiting all areas so please look out for further details via the Provincial website and communications will be sent to the Lodge secretary’s etc.

As you can see from this report it has been another very busy year and I would like to thank all those involved with these applications because without the help from the Lodge Almoners and Visiting Brethren who assist me we would not be in a position to help those that need the help most.

If I can help or give advice to anyone or if you would like me to visit your Lodge to talk about the Masonic Charities please contact me (details below):
