Each year members of the public living in the area of jurisdiction for North Tyneside Council who have made a difference to their communities via their voluntary work receive recognition by means of a Community Commendation Award. At a ceremony held at the Council’s headquarters in June the Chairman presented this year’s Gold Award to W. Bro. Jim Nicholson, PAGDC, Treasurer of Belvedere Lodge No.6558.

Jim was nominated for his extensive work over the last 45 years with hundreds of young people through the 7th Tynemouth Scout Group.

With the support of his family Jim gives several hours a week to Cub and Scout meetings; and also supports Tynemouth Districts Adventure Centre at Powburn in North Northumberland, which benefits young people in North Tyneside who are not part of Scouting. The 7th is now led by Scouts trained by Jim and he sees 50-60 young people taking part in Scouting every week – enjoying regular camps, hikes and other activities that build life skills.

Away from Scouting Jim was one of the instigators of the movement to give breaks in this country to the young victims of the Chernobyl disaster and to this day maintains contacts with many of those former children who have subsequently achieved adulthood and visit with their families.

On a lighter note Jim maintains his fitness being an active member of the Monkseaton Morris men, who attend Morris dancing festivals countrywide.
