This year’s Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge of Northumberland took place on Wednesday 30th November 2016 at Newcastle Racecourse, High Gosforth Park, Newcastle upon Tyne at 3 p.m. It was a record turnout with a large number of distinguished guests from various parts of the country including our neighbouring Provinces of Durham and Cumberland and Westmorland.
The Provincial honours for this year consisted of over 70 first appointments and 88 promotions. Everyone was very surprised by a promotion of Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden awarded to W Bro. Bill Doherty of Holy Stone Lodge No.6171. Bill is 94 and has been honoured with the Legion D'Honneur from the French Government this year. He was proudly wearing his campaign medals along with the Legion D' Honneur which is France's highest distinction and on average 10 British nationals per year receive such an honour.
W Bro. Doherty is a D-Day veteran and the French Government since 2014 have been honouring and thanking those who fought & risked their lives to secure France's liberation during World War 2.
After the appointments and promotions, a very interesting talk about the Masonic Charity Foundation, the newly formed Masonic Charity was given by V W Bro. James Newman, its Deputy President and Chairman. Our R W Provincial Grand Master (PGM) then presented V W Bro. Newman with a cheque for £250,000 towards our 2020 Festival.
There were over 400 dining at the festive board with another excellent food. After the meal, a number of cheques for the NMCA and 2020 Festival were presented to our PGM. Overall it was a very enjoyable, successful and memorable day.
